Mike Horne brings experience as a people and culture change-maker and leader gained serving clients around the world. He has led People and Culture teams in preeminent global brands, including Marriott International, Willis Towers Watson, Genentech and Roche Pharmaceuticals, Brocade Communications Systems, and Gilead Sciences, Incorporated. His coaching clients include the American Foundation for the Blind, Darden Restaurants, ExxonMobil, HP, Kaiser Permanente, and McKesson.
Mike is the author of Integrity by Design: Working and Living Authentically (2021), and his writing appears in Psychology Today, Thrive Global, Manage HR, and other publications. He was the former columnist of Executive Coach for American Express Publishing and currently the host of the Authentic Change Podcast with Mike Horne. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Organization Development Review.
Mike helps leaders move from possibility to probability, whether they are facing career transitions, learning to scale in a new role, or increasing their effectiveness and influence. Mike coaches a focus on goal-directed behaviors that create improvement and sustain progress. He helps clients to develop their strengths with the recognition that what got you here won’t get you there.
With a combination of superb interpersonal and facilitation skills, Mike puts people at ease naturally and works with candor. Mike brings hope, presence, and discernment to every engagement. He believes in the success of his clients to bring their best to every situation.
As a consultant, Mike helped create the most diverse Board of Directors in a Fortune 250 company. He coached top-level executives in a global energy company to align on a core set of leadership principles. In a national nonprofit, Mike coached the leadership team on its strategic direction and development plan. Mike has coached C-level executives and aspiring leadership talent, across many disciplines, including Engineering, Research, Sales and Marketing, Human Resources, and Manufacturing Operations.
As a business leader at Marriott International, Mike served as the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Human Resources Officer as the company doubled in size. Later, Mike was a Chief Learning Strategist at Nortel Networks, when it was Canada’s largest private employer. At Genentech, Mike led five of the company’s early Great Place to Work campaigns and subsequently led the Organization Effectiveness team at Roche for a 12,000-person Operations organization spanning 23 countries. At Brocade Communications, Mike led a global HR team of sixty as the company completed seven acquisitions. At Gilead Sciences, Mike was the Research HR leader and an executive on the Research Leadership Team.
Mike has a Bachelor’s degree in Labor Relations from LaSalle University (Philadelphia, PA) and a Master’s of Science in Human Resources and Organization Development from The American University (DC). He earned his doctorate from The Fielding Institute (Santa Barbara, CA), concentrating on Human and Organizational Systems. His research focused on comparing the lived experiences of leaders and leadership developers. He completed The Immunity to Change Coaching program led by Harvard Graduate School of Education Professors Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey.
He has served as an Executive Trustee of the Organization Development Network and is a distinguished service award recipient. He has served on the Advisory Board to the American Red Cross Board of Governors and provided service to the Dave Thomas Foundation. Mike served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in the Solomon Islands.
