IH038 - The Measure of Us with Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan

Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan is an academic economist, an environmental activist, and the Founder and Executive Director of Sustainable Practices. She has a PhD., Master’s, and Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Vanderbilt University, a Masters in Sustainability and Environmental Management from Harvard University, and a Masters In Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. Dr. Madhavi is also a multi-published author and a recipient of a Fulbright Distinguished Lectureship and is passionate about implementing sustainability within the individual and community decision-making process.

Dr. Madhavi joins me today to explore the measure of us, our consumption-driven behaviors, and why we need to redefine progress and our society’s actions. She shares how the U.S. created GDP in the 1940s and developed a success model focused on consumption and convenience. We discuss how the consumption-model and social construction of our reality affect our culture and encourages us to evaluate people on their wealth. Dr. Madhavi reveals the alternatives to GDP and why we need to refocus on spiritual or religious-driven purposes and living locally with increased human intimacy. She also highlights how fear prevents us from reaching our maximum potential and encourages us to recognize that little things matter and can make a difference.

“We have to act and behave in unison for the impact of our changes to really have significance.” - Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan
