IH003 - FINDING MEANING IN THE TIME OF COVID

In one felled pandemic swoop, humans have become both disconnected and more connected. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the way humans communicate with each other has changed. Before, we could decipher the meaning behind a person’s words or phrases by using their body language and tone as well as the standard meanings of words. But as people are less likely to be in the same room during meetings and conversations turn to an online setting like email or Zoom conferences, the communication barriers begin to build - often causing disruption, confusion, and misunderstandings.

In today’s episode, I explain how the COVID-19 pandemic has opened the door to new opportunities for the way we communicate with our friends, co-workers, and loved ones. I discuss what meaning - itself - means and how to find more of it. I explain why meaning is more than merely the words we use, but rather, it is informed by our intentions, context, tone, and the manner in which they are expressed. I discuss why text and email are not suitable communication tools when trying to convey a complex or emotionally charged message. I also share the steps we can take to improve our communication skills and ensure we’re conveying our intentions and meanings effectively, especially in the time of COVID.

If you care about being a better communicator, a better meaning conveyer and receiver, give this a listen.

“When meaning is lost, all is lost. When meaning is misunderstood, the costs - the human costs are profound.”
